Sergei Gavrilovich Vladimirov: A Russian Weapons Designer and Inventor
Early Life and Education
Sergei Vladimirov was born in Moscow, Russia, into a family of railway workers. He attended the Ivanovo-Voznesensk Mechanical and Technical School, graduating in 1913.
Career in Engineering
Vladimirov began his career as a mechanic, technician, and engineer in various factories and mines in Russia. During the Russian Civil War, he organized a workshop for repairing firearms for a partisan detachment.
Entry into the Military
In 1920, Vladimirov joined the Red Army, where he served until 1922. Upon his demobilization, he joined the Tula Arms Factory, where he quickly rose through the ranks to Senior Engineer-Constructor.
Weapon Design Innovations
In 1930, Vladimirov designed a universal tripod mount for the Maxim machine gun. In 1932, he created the LUBAK, a 12.7mm heavy machine gun that could be converted into a 20mm cannon.
Move to Kovrov
In 1934, Vladimirov moved to Kovrov to work on the production of the ShKAS machine guns at the Kovrov Arms and Machine Gun Factory. In 1939, he designed one of the most successful anti-tank rifles of the era.
World War II Innovations
During World War II, Vladimirov developed the SPV heavy machine gun and the APV aircraft gun. His efforts culminated in the creation of the PKK infantry machine gun.
Post-War Innovations
In collaboration with G.P. Markov, Vladimirov designed a twin anti-aircraft mount. He received the USSR State Prize, the Order of the Patriotic War, and the Medal "For Victory over Germany in the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945" for his contributions to weapons design.
