Serdar Berdymukhamedov: The President of Turkmenistan
Early Life and EducationSerdar Berdymukhamedov was born on September 22, 1981, in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan. He is the only son of former President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov. In 2001, he graduated from the Turkmen Agricultural University named after S.A. Niyazov with a degree in engineering technology.
Early Career and Diplomatic Service
After graduating, Berdymukhamedov worked as a chief specialist at the Directorate of Foreign Economic Relations of the Food Industry Association of Turkmenistan. From 2008 to 2011, he served as a counselor-envoy at the Turkmen Embassy in Moscow, Russia.
In 2011, he graduated from the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Foreign Ministry with a degree in international relations. He then served as an advisor to the Permanent Mission of Turkmenistan to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Switzerland.
Political Career in Turkmenistan
Upon his return to Turkmenistan in 2013, Berdymukhamedov was appointed as Head of the Department of European Countries at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 2016, he became Director of the Department of International Information at the same ministry.
In 2016, he was elected as a deputy to the Mejlis, the Turkmen parliament. In 2017, he became Chairman of the Committee on Legislation and Its Norms.
Ascent to Presidency
In 2018, Berdymukhamedov was appointed as Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs. In 2019, he became the Deputy Governor of Ahal Province. In 2020, he was appointed as Minister of Industry and then as Deputy Prime Minister for Innovation and Digitalization.
On February 11, 2021, Berdymukhamedov was appointed as Chairman of the Supreme Control Chamber and a member of the State Security Council.
Presidency
On March 14, 2022, Berdymukhamedov was nominated as the candidate for President of Turkmenistan by the ruling Democratic Party. He won the snap election on March 15, 2022, with 72.97% of the vote.
Berdymukhamedov took the oath of office on March 19, 2022, becoming the third President of Turkmenistan. He promised to continue the policies of his father.
Foreign Policy
As President, Berdymukhamedov has focused on strengthening ties with neighboring countries and international organizations. He has met with several world leaders, including Vladimir Putin of Russia and Ram Nath Kovind of India.
Personal Life
