Early Life and Career
Sergej Barbarez, a former Yugoslavian and Bosnian footballer, initially showed a preference for gymnastics and basketball during his childhood. However, in 1984, he joined the youth team of FK Velež. In 1990, he made his debut for the club's senior team. However, shortly after signing his professional contract, he was conscripted into the Yugoslav Army.
Breakthrough in Germany
During the 1992 New Year's holiday, the 20-year-old Barbarez traveled to Germany to visit his uncle. Through his uncle's connections, he was offered a trial at Hannover 96, a 2. Bundesliga club. Impressing the club, Barbarez signed a contract with Hannover.
Rise Through the Ranks
In 1993, Barbarez joined Union Berlin, a 3. Liga club. Union Berlin earned promotion to the 2. Bundesliga twice in a row, but the German football association (NFS) denied them both times due to financial irregularities. Union Berlin, unable to retain key players, saw Barbarez depart as well.
Bundesliga Debut and Rise to Prominence
In 1996, Barbarez finally made his Bundesliga debut with Hansa Rostock. It was during his time at Hansa that he fully transitioned to the forward position. In 1998, he moved to Borussia Dortmund but failed to secure a consistent role. In 2000, he was sold to Hamburger SV.
Peak of Career at Hamburger SV
Barbarez's years at Hamburger SV were the most successful of his career. In his first season, he scored an impressive 22 goals. In total, he scored 72 goals for Hamburger SV.
Later Career and Retirement
In 2006, Barbarez signed with Bayer Leverkusen, where he became the foreign player with the most Bundesliga appearances (323). In the same year, he retired from playing.
Post-Retirement
On January 27, 2009, Barbarez was elected to the supervisory board of Hamburger SV. However, on May 30, 2010, after being overlooked for the position of sporting director, he resigned from the club.
