Biography of Sergey Kamenev

Sergey Kamenev was a military leader and a Commanding Army General of the 1st rank. He led the Red Army's offensive on the Volga and Ural against Kolchak's forces. In 1920, Kamenev was awarded the Order of the Red Banner and received a golden weapon.

Early Life and Military Career

Sergey Kamenev was born into a family of a military engineer and was raised in a devout Orthodox household. He studied at the Vladimir Kiev Cadet Corps and graduated from the Alexander Military School in 1900. He entered the military as a Second Lieutenant in the 165th Infantry Regiment in Lutsk.

In 1907, Kamenev graduated from the Nikolaev Academy of the General Staff and became a Staff Captain. He then commanded a company in the 165th Infantry Lutsk Regiment. In 1909, he served as an assistant to the Senior Adjutant of the Irkutsk Military District Staff, and in 1910, he became the Senior Adjutant of the 2nd Cavalry Division Staff.

Role in the Russian Civil War

In 1911, Kamenev served as an assistant to the Senior Adjutant of the Vilnius Military District Staff, and in 1914, he became the Senior Adjutant of the General Quartermaster's Department of the 1st Army Staff. Promoted to Colonel in 1915, he commanded the 30th Infantry Poltava Regiment in April 1917. From November 1917, he served as the Chief of Staff of the 15th Army Corps and later, until April 1918, as the Chief of Staff of the 3rd Army.

In April 1918, Kamenev joined the Red Army and became a military leader of the Nevel District in the Western Front. From June 1918, he commanded the 1st Vitebsk Infantry Division, and from August 1918, he served as an assistant to the leader of the Western Front and simultaneously as the military leader of the Smolensk District. From August 1918 to July 1919, with a break in May 1919, he was the Commander of the forces of the Eastern Front.

Later Military and Political Career

Kamenev continued to lead the Red Army's offensive on the Volga and Ural against Kolchak's forces. In 1920, he was awarded the Order of the Red Banner and received a golden weapon. From July 1919 to April 1924, he served as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Republic.

From April 1924, Kamenev worked as an inspector of the Red Army, and from March 1925, he became the Chief of Staff. In November 1925, he became the Chief Inspector and later the Head of the Main Administration of the Red Army, as well as the Chief Director of the Military Academy of Tactics. From April 1924 to May 1927, he was also a member of the Revolutionary Military Council of the USSR.

In 1935, Kamenev was promoted to the rank of Commanding Army General of the 1st rank. He is also known for being the author of memoirs about Lenin. After his death, Kamenev was later "exposed as a Trotskyist," and his name was not mentioned in official histories of the Civil War during Stalin's era. His ashes were interred in the Kremlin Wall. He was awarded the Order of Saint Stanislaus of the 3rd degree in 1912 and the Order of the Red Banner in 1920.
