Reverend Martyr Severin Baranyk
Severin Baranyk, a priest of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, was beatified as a martyr on June 26, 2001, by Pope John Paul II.
Monastic Vocation
Baranyk's journey began on September 24, 1904, when he entered the Congregation of Saint Basil the Great. In 1907, he took his first monastic vows, and on September 21, 1910, he became a professed monk.
Priesthood and Leadership
Baranyk's ordination to the priesthood took place on February 14, 1915. In 1932, he assumed the role of abbot of the monastery and pastor of the Greek Catholic parish in the city of Drohobych.
Arrest and Imprisonment
On June 26, 1941, Baranyk was arrested by the NKVD (Soviet security police) and incarcerated in the Drohobych prison. The circumstances of his death remain unknown, but his body was discovered on the prison grounds after the retreat of Soviet forces.
Legacy and Beatification
Baranyk is recognized as a martyr for his faith and for the persecution he endured during the Soviet era. His beatification, a testament to his virtue and sacrifice, was a moment of great significance for the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.
