Grandma Hulk: A Record-Breaking Powerlifter
Breaking Age BarriersAt the age of 69, American retiree Sherry Mobly has become a living testament to the adage that age is just a mindset. As "Grandma Hulk," she recently set a world powerlifting record in her age group, proving that determination knows no bounds.
Lifting Heavy, Breaking Records
On her way to celebrating her 70th birthday in June, Mobly smashed the record by deadlifting an astounding 138 kg at a sanctioned event in North Little Rock, Arkansas. The grandmother of ten is far from slowing down, stating, "This is my motivation. This is what keeps me going. Sitting around is not my thing."
A Gym Journey
Mobly's journey began when she picked up the weights in her sixties. Her trainer, Kurt Mattison, recalls, "I think she's helped me more than I have her." Before "Grandma Hulk" agreed to train under Mattison, she set strict ground rules: "She looked at me and said, 'You don't cuss around me. Do you understand?' And I felt like I was getting a talking-to from my momma. I said, 'Yes ma'am.'"
Powerlifting for Health
Apart from her record-breaking feats, Mobly emphasizes the health benefits of powerlifting, particularly in combating osteoporosis. She says, "Retired people, they're either out walking their dogs or playing cards or reading. That's not my thing."
Training Regimen
With a dedicated training regimen that includes up to two hours of gym time four days a week, Mobly can perform an impressive 175 squats. With her trainer's guidance, she plans to increase the weight and rep count later this year.
Mind over Matter
Mobly credits her success to her mental fortitude. "The coach tells me it's mostly up here," she says, pointing to her head. "He tells me I've got the strength and the ability, but it's my gray matter that gets in the way."
Inspiration for Others
As an inspiration to her peers, "Grandma Hulk" encourages others to follow in her footsteps. She believes that anyone can achieve similar success, adding that she aims to increase her squats to 205 by October.
