Early Life and Education

Sharon Epatha Merkerson was born on November 28, 1952, in Detroit, Michigan, as the youngest of five children. Her mother, Anne, was the only female employee in the Detroit Post Office's motor vehicle department. Epatha's father worked in a factory. The family split when she was five years old.

College and Artistic Beginnings

Merkerson graduated from Cooley High School in 1970. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wayne State University, majoring in communications. In 1978, she relocated to New York City to pursue her acting career. Wayne State University later awarded her an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree in 2009.

Television Debut and Breakthrough Role

Merkerson's television debut came in 1987 as Reba, a mail carrier in "Pee-wee's Playhouse." She impressed the show's creators with her comedic talent. After appearing in "The Cosby Show," she landed her breakthrough role as Lieutenant Anita Van Buren in the long-running series "Law and Order" in 1991. She remains the show's longest-running cast member.
