Shasi Haskel: A Rising Star in Israeli Politics
Early Life and EducationShasi Haskel was born in Toronto, Canada, on August 24, 1985, to Jewish parents Amir and Fabienne. Her father, an Israeli born in Moshav Tzofit, descended from Palmach veterans, and her mother emigrated from Morocco. After meeting in Paris, the couple moved to Toronto when Fabienne received a job offer to teach English. The Haskel family returned to Israel a year after Shasi's birth.
She grew up and was educated in Kfar Saba, Israel. As a youth, she was actively involved in student councils and participated in the Scouts movement. Haskel completed her secondary education at Katznelson High School in Kfar Saba and Ankori High School in Raanana.
Military Service
At the age of 18, Haskel enlisted in the Border Police unit of the Israel Defense Forces. She attributed her political ideology largely to her experiences during the Second Intifada, where she served at checkpoints and narrowly escaped two suicide bombings on Israeli buses. Tragically, she lost two friends to terrorist attacks.
Post-Military Career
After completing her military service, Haskel studied in the United States for a year and later lived in Australia for six years. She completed the AVT Australia veterinary technician program and worked as a vet at Bondi Vet Hospital in Sydney. In Australia, Haskel joined the Wildlife Preservation Society and collaborated on wildlife projects with Sydney residents and the municipality.
Upon returning to Israel, Haskel earned a bachelor's degree in political science and international relations from the Open University of Israel. She won the Israeli National Junior Debating Championship in 2014 and is an alumna of the Jewish State Fund's Public Policy Program.
Personal Life
Haskel is fluent in Hebrew, English, and French. She resides in Kfar Saba and leads a vegetarian lifestyle. In June 2016, she married Eyal Harpaz. They welcomed their daughter, Yael, on October 17, 2020.
Political Career
Haskel's involvement in politics began in 2013 when she ran unsuccessfully for the Kfar Saba Municipal Council as part of the Likud party. Despite the electoral setback, she continued to volunteer in the municipality's environmental committee.
In 2015, she secured 31st place on the Likud party list for the Knesset elections but initially missed out on a seat due to Likud winning only 30 seats. However, when Dani Danon was appointed Israel's ambassador to the United Nations, Haskel entered the Knesset on August 27, 2015, as his replacement.
