Sean Burr was an American professional ice hockey player, known for his career in the National Hockey League (NHL). Born on February 2, 1966, in Detroit, Michigan, Burr had a successful hockey career before his untimely death.

Professional Career

Sean Burr's professional career began in 1984 when he was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings as the seventh overall pick. He played for the Detroit Red Wings for the majority of his professional career, but also had stints with other teams like the Tampa Bay Lightning and the San Jose Sharks. Burr scored 181 goals and made 259 assists throughout his career, accumulating a total of 1069 penalty minutes.

Retirement and Contributions

In 2000, Burr announced his retirement from professional hockey. However, he remained involved in the sport by taking on administrative roles. In 2007, he was elected as the president of the Detroit Red Wings Alumni Association, actively participating in various charity events and fundraising activities for children. Burr also served as the president of the Port Huron Icehawks, a hockey organization in the International Hockey League.

Battle with Leukemia

In February 2011, Burr was diagnosed with leukemia, specifically myeloid leukemia. He underwent chemotherapy, and for a while, it seemed like he had conquered the disease. Unfortunately, the cancer returned in 2012. Despite his illness, Burr continued to contribute to society by supporting programs and initiatives for bone marrow transplant patients, such as the partnership with the Michigan Dental Society and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Tragic Accident and Passing

On August 5, 2013, tragedy struck when Burr had a severe accident at his home. The fall resulted in extensive brain damage, and he passed away later that evening. Burr's friends and colleagues described him as a remarkably joyful, energetic, and positive person. His optimistic outlook on life contributed to his success both on and off the ice.
