Early Life and Military Career
Born in Germany, the future Israeli general and politician fled to the British Mandate of Palestine with his parents after Hitler's rise to power. In 1944, he joined the Haganah paramilitary organization. After the establishment of Israel, he served in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in the armored corps.
Military Leadership
As commander of the 7th Armored Brigade, he participated in the 1967 Six-Day War. Later, as Chief of Staff of the Central Command, he played a significant role in the 1973 Yom Kippur War. In 1969-1970, he commanded the 252nd Armored Division.
Chief of Personnel and Retirement
From 1970 to 1973, he served as Head of Human Resources for the IDF. After retiring from active military duty with the rank of Major General, he joined the human rights organization Yesh Din.
Political Career
In February 1974, he became the eighth Mayor of Tel Aviv. Elected as a member of the Likud party, he served in this capacity until November 1993. He is known for his contributions to the city's infrastructure and cultural development.
