Early Life and Career
Shola Ameobi, a Nigerian-English footballer, was born in Nigeria and moved to Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England at the age of five. He began his footballing journey with Walker Central Boys Club, where he caught the attention of scouts from Newcastle United at the age of 13. On July 1, 1995, he was signed to the club's academy.
Newcastle United Debut
Ameobi progressed through Newcastle's youth ranks and made his reserve team debut in a match against Chelsea on October 11, 1998. His first appearance for the senior team came two years later, on September 9, 2000, in a home game against Chelsea. Ameobi made 22 appearances in his debut season, often filling in for injured players like Alan Shearer and Carl Cort.
Champions League Highlights
Ameobi made a name for himself in the 2002/03 UEFA Champions League, scoring a late equalizer at the Nou Camp against Barcelona in a 1-3 defeat. He also netted a brace against Bayer Leverkusen in a 3-1 victory.
Premier League Contributions
Ameobi struggled to hold down a regular starting position and was primarily used as a substitute due to his inconsistent form and lack of prolific goalscoring. However, at the end of the 2005/06 season, he found himself in the starting lineup due to a series of injuries, and he scored six goals in his final 12 Premier League games.
Cup Success
In the 2006 UEFA Intertoto Cup, Ameobi scored a brace against Norwegian side Lillestrøm.
Injury Setback
Ameobi required hip surgery during the 2006/07 season after suffering from an injury that had bothered him in the previous campaign. Despite the need for the operation, a shortage of fit strikers forced manager Glenn Roeder to delay the surgery until after the January transfer window. Ameobi eventually went under the knife two months before the window opened, after a goalless away match against Manchester City. He was ruled out for the rest of the season, having made 12 appearances and scored 5 goals.
International Career
Born in Nigeria, Ameobi represented the England youth teams for three years, scoring seven goals between 2000 and 2003. He is the joint eighth-highest goalscorer for the England U21s.
Personal Life
Ameobi is the older brother of footballers Sammy and Tomi Ameobi, who play for Newcastle's youth teams.
