Biography of Shuler Hensley

Shuler Hensley was born on March 6, 1967, in Atlanta, Arizona, USA. He is an American singer and actor. He is the youngest of three children in his family. His father, Sam P. Hensley Jr., was a football star at the Georgia Institute of Technology, an engineer, and a state senator. His mother, Iris Ently Hensley, was a ballet dancer and artistic director of the Georgia Ballet.

Early Life and Education

Hensley began his career in show business at the age of four, playing the role of Fritz in "The Nutcracker." He received his education at Westminster School and partially at the University of Georgia, where he focused on baseball. After meeting American opera singer Jessye Norman, he became involved in a college production of "Sweeney Todd," where he played the character Tobias.

Hensley left university after his second year to study vocal performance at the Manhattan School of Music, specializing in opera. He graduated in 1989. He then attended the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he obtained a master's degree in 1993.

Career

Hensley began his stage career in the early 1990s, playing Pitkin in the musical "On the Town" with music by Leonard Bernstein and libretto by Betty Comden and Adolph Green. He also portrayed Joe in Frank Loesser's musical "The Most Happy Fella" and Miles in Stephen Sondheim's musical "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum." He performed in the operetta "The Pirates of Penzance" by William Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, as well as in operas such as "Carmen," "Faust," "Don Giovanni," and Giacomo Puccini's "La Bohème."

Hensley appeared as Jud Fry in the musical "Oklahoma!" at the North Shore Music Theatre in Boston and played Curly in the opera theater production of "Oklahoma!" in Milwaukee. In 1996, he moved to Hamburg, Germany, where he landed the lead role in the German production of "The Phantom of the Opera."

In 1998, he played the tragic character Jud Fry in the revival of "Oklahoma!" at the National Theatre in London. The production was a huge success, and Hensley received numerous positive reviews and won the prestigious Laurence Olivier Award for his contributions to the London theater. He continued his stage career, joining the West End Theatres in 1999, becoming the only American in the cast. He also appeared on Broadway (2002-2003), where he won a Tony Award for his performance. In 2002, he received the Drama Desk Award and the Outer Critics Circle Award.

Hensley has also appeared in television series such as "Law & Order" and "Law & Order: Criminal Intent," "Ed," and "Jury." He has worked in films such as Tony Goldwyn's drama "Flirting with Disaster," Ernest R. Dickerson's "Monday Night Mayhem," Yudhishthir Prasad's comedy "Opa!," Stephen Sommers' popular horror-action film "Van Helsing," and Martin Campbell's adventure western "The Legend of Zorro."

Personal Life

Hensley is married to Paula DeRosa, and they have two children together.
