Liang Sicheng: A Pioneer in Chinese Architectural History
Early Life and EducationLiang Sicheng was born on April 20, 1901, in Tokyo, Japan. His father, Liang Qichao, had sought refuge there in 1898 to escape execution as a leader of China's reform movement. Liang Sicheng arrived in China for the first time in 1911 when his father returned home.
He studied at Tsinghua Polytechnic Institute in Beijing from 1915 to 1923, before pursuing a degree in architecture at the University of Pennsylvania. He graduated with a Master's degree in 1927 and went on to study Chinese architecture at Harvard University.
Research and Fieldwork
In early 1928, Liang Sicheng married Lin Huiyin, a renowned poet and architect. He also traveled extensively in Europe before returning to China and becoming a professor at Northeastern University in Shenyang.
In 1931, he became the director of the Society for Research in Chinese Architecture. Liang initiated extensive fieldwork, exploring over 2,000 architectural monuments in over 200 counties across China by the 1940s.
International Accomplishments
In 1946, Liang published "A History of Chinese Architecture" in English. He was invited to give lectures at Princeton and Yale Universities in the United States, where he also joined a team of architects designing the United Nations Headquarters.
Return to China and Later Years
Due to his wife's illness, Liang returned to China in 1947. He was elected to the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1948 and received an honorary doctorate from Princeton University the same year.
Liang joined the Chinese Communist Party in 1959 and contributed to urban planning and architectural design in Beijing. He also participated in creating the State Emblem of the People's Republic of China and other notable structures.
He taught at Tsinghua University from 1946 to 1972 and passed away in Beijing on January 9, 1972. Liang Sicheng is widely regarded as a pioneer in the field of Chinese architectural history, leaving a lasting legacy through his research and contributions to the preservation and appreciation of China's architectural heritage.
