Sid Bernstein: An American Promoter and Producer

Sid Bernstein (Sid Bernstein, August 12, 1918 – August 21, 2013) was an American producer and impresario who radically transformed the face of the American music industry in the 1960s by introducing "The Beatles," "The Rolling Stones," "Herman's Hermits," "The Moody Blues," and "The Kinks" to America. He became the first impresario to organize rock concerts in stadiums.

Early Life and Career

Bernstein was born in New York City. During World War II, he served in France as part of an American Anti-Aircraft battalion.

The British Invasion

One of Bernstein's main contributions was organizing the so-called "British Invasion." After Bernstein brought "The Beatles" to the United States, the world, and particularly America, recognized and embraced the talents of British musicians. The first exposure to the still relatively unknown British group for Americans occurred in late December 1963 in Virginia, where local DJs played exclusively "The Beatles" at a concert. A similar event took place in New York City in January 1964, where the British music was equally well-received. Bernstein also arranged for "The Beatles" to perform on Ed Sullivan's show and at Carnegie Hall. He organized a concert for his proteges at Shea Stadium, although he admitted that listening to the performance was practically impossible. It was during this concert that Bernstein first announced upcoming shows for another group he managed, "The Rascals." He worked with this group for nearly five years, during which time they changed their name from "Young Rascals" to "Rascals" and transformed from an unknown band to a successful and popular group.

Other Contributions and Legacy

Bernstein also organized concerts for artists such as Lenny Kravitz, Frank Sinatra, Jimi Hendrix, Laura Branigan, Melanie, and "Sly & the Family Stone." In 1964, thanks to Bernstein, a whole host of outstanding Israeli singers and artists, including Shoshana Damari, Shaike Ophir, and Yaffa Yarkoni, made their way to the United States. Sid Bernstein became the first promoter to organize a rock concert at Madison Square Garden.

Death and Family

Sid Bernstein passed away on August 21, 2013, at the age of 95. He was survived by his wife, Geraldine Gale, six children, and six grandchildren.
