Biography of Simonas Daukantas

Simonas Daukantas was a Lithuanian historian, writer, and enlightener who was also known for his collection of folklore. He was born on October 28, 1793, into a peasant family.

Early Life and Education

Daukantas received his education at the schools in Krettingen and Zhmudskaya Kalvaria, as well as at the Vilnius Gymnasium. In 1816, he entered Vilnius University, initially studying literature and liberal arts, and later focusing on moral and political sciences. During his time at the university, he specialized in the study of history and ancient literature. He completed his studies at Vilnius University in 1819, graduating with a degree in candidacy.

Career and Contributions

After completing his studies, Daukantas served in the chancellery of the Governor-General in Riga. He later became an assistant metrician of the Lithuanian metrics in the Senate's chancellery in Saint Petersburg. Even during his student years, Daukantas began writing his work "The Deeds of Ancient Lithuanians and Zhemaits". In Saint Petersburg, he created his most significant works, including the historical research "Customs of Ancient Lithuanians," the folk song collection "Zhemaits Songs," and books intended for the enlightenment of the people. He also translated ancient writers, recorded proverbs and sayings, and laid the foundations for Lithuanian romanticized national historiography. Daukantas was one of the early ideologists of Lithuanian national revival and also highlighted the role of the Catholic Church as an organizer and accomplice in the Teutonic Knights' raids on Lithuania.

Later Years and Legacy

Daukantas spent his last years in the village of Papile, where he passed away on December 6, 1864, at the age of 72. His contributions to Lithuanian history, folklore, and literature were significant, making him an important figure in the country's cultural development.
