Biography of Siro Akabori
Siro Akabori was a Japanese organic and biochemist, a member of the Japan Academy of Sciences and a foreign member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. He was born on October 20, 1900, in Shizuoka Prefecture. In 1925, he graduated from Tohoku University and continued his studies in Europe and the United States, focusing on the study of organic chemistry. Starting from 1935, he taught chemistry at Osaka University, eventually becoming a professor in 1938.
In 1958, Akabori established the Protein Research Institute at Osaka University and became its first director. From December 1960 to December 1966, he served as the president of Osaka University. On February 12, 1964, he was elected as a member of the Japan Academy of Sciences in the field of organic biochemistry. On February 8, 1966, he became a foreign member of the USSR Academy of Sciences. He also held the position of president of the Japanese Biochemical Society from the same year. In 1967, he became the president of the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research (RIKEN).
Contributions to Science
Akabori conducted research in the fields of biochemistry and organic chemistry. He authored works such as "Development of Organic Chemistry" and "Amino Acids and Proteins."
