Early Life and CareerMary Elizabeth Spacek, known professionally as Sissy Spacek, was born in Quitman, Texas. Her nickname, "Sissy," given to her by her brothers, stuck with her throughout her life. Aspiring to become a singer, Spacek moved to New York City, where she performed in Greenwich Village cafes and worked as a voiceover artist. She subsequently enrolled at the Lee Strasberg Theatre & Institute.
Spacek's film debut came in 1971 with Andy Warhol's "Trash," but her official debut is considered to be Terrence Malick's "Badlands" (1972), starring alongside Martin Sheen. However, her breakthrough role came in 1976 with Brian De Palma's "Carrie," based on the novel by Stephen King. The Academy Award nominated her for Best Actress, but the award went to Faye Dunaway that year.

In 1980, Spacek received her first Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of country singer Loretta Lynn in "Coal Miner's Daughter." This role is widely regarded as one of her finest performances.
