Jahvante Smart's Early Life and Family
Jahvante Smart, better known by his stage name Smoke Dawg, was born on November 18, 1996, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He was of Jamaican descent and grew up in the Regent Park neighborhood.
Musical Beginnings
Smart began rapping at a young age and joined the Halal Gang, a hip-hop collective that included SAFE, Puffy L'z, and Mo-G. In 2015, he gained recognition for his verse on the popular remix of "Trap House" with French Montana.
Breakthrough Success
Smoke Dawg's breakthrough came with the release of his track "Still." He also gained attention through his collaboration with UK grime artist Skepta on the song "Overseas," which amassed over 530,000 views on YouTube. Smart became associated with the Toronto music collective Full Circle, which included the Prime Boys and Halal Gang groups.
Drake's Influence and Touring
From February to March 2017, Smoke Dawg toured with Drake on the Boy Meets World Tour, which further increased his popularity. He released the track "Fountain Freestyle" shortly before his death.
Tragic End
On June 30, 2018, Smart was fatally shot outside the Cube nightclub in Toronto, Ontario. The suspects fled the scene in a black SUV. He was just 21 years old.
Legacy
Smoke Dawg's death sent shockwaves through the Toronto music community and beyond. Drake, Mustafa the Poet, and other artists paid tribute to his talent and legacy. He was seen as a rising star with a promising future in hip-hop.
