Early Life and Education
Sergei Bagapsh was born in Sukhumi, Abkhazia. He graduated from the philological faculty of the Sukhumi Pedagogical Institute with a degree in Russian language and literature.
Military Service and Early Career
After graduating, Bagapsh served in the Soviet Army from 1956 to 1959. Upon his discharge, he worked at the Tvarchali Thermal Power Plant and was elected secretary of the Tvarchali City Council in 1967.
Political Rise
In 1985, Bagapsh joined the Tvarchali City Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) as the head of the agitation and propaganda department. From 1988 to 1992, he served as the editor-in-chief of the newspaper "Tvarchal'skiy Gornjak."
Deputy and Prime Minister
In 1991, Bagapsh was elected as a deputy to the Supreme Council of Abkhazia. In 1992, he became deputy chairman of the Supreme Council. In 1993, he was appointed Prime Minister.
Geneva Peace Negotiations
As Prime Minister, Bagapsh led the official Abkhazian delegation to the peace negotiations in Geneva.
Speaker of Parliament
Following the war, Bagapsh was elected speaker of the newly formed parliament, the People's Assembly, for both its first and second terms.
