Sophie Wilmès: The First Female Prime Minister of Belgium
Early Life and EducationSophie Wilmès, born on January 15, 1975, was the daughter of Philippe Wilmès, a professor of economics. At the age of 18, she embarked on a two-month backpacking adventure through Latin America. After her travels, she completed studies in public relations.
Political Career
Wilmès entered politics in 2000 as a councilor for Uccle. In 2007, she became a deputy mayor of Sint-Genesius-Rode. She became the President of the Reformist Movement in Flemish Brabant in 2013.
In 2014, Wilmès was elected to the Belgian parliament. She served as the Federal Minister of Budget and National Lottery from 2015 to 2018. She expanded her portfolio as Minister of Public Service and Scientific Infrastructure from 2018 to 2019.
Prime Minister of Belgium
On October 27, 2019, Wilmès was appointed as Belgium's first female Prime Minister by King Philippe. She inherited a political crisis that had plagued the country since the collapse of the ruling coalition in 2018.
COVID-19 Pandemic Response
During her tenure, Wilmès faced the COVID-19 pandemic. She formed a full-fledged government in March 2020 to combat the spread of the virus. Wilmès prioritized public health and implemented strict lockdown measures.
Transfer of Power
After six months, Wilmès resigned as Prime Minister on October 1, 2020. She transferred power to Alexander De Croo, who appointed her as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Personal Life
In 2009, Wilmès married Christopher Stone, an Australian advertising executive. They have three daughters together: Victoria, Charlotte, and Elizabeth. The family resides in Sint-Genesius-Rode.
