The Accomplishments of Versis at the 1896 Olympics

Versis, a skilled Greek athlete, left his mark at the inaugural modern Olympic Games in 1896. His exceptional abilities earned him two bronze medals in both track and field and weightlifting.

The Discus Event

On April 6th, Versis showcased his prowess in the discus throw. Despite the impressive performance of American Robert Garrett and his fellow Greek Panagiotis Paraskevopoulos, Versis secured a respectable third place. His impressive throw covered a distance of 27.78 meters.

Weightlifting Triumph

The following day, Versis ventured into the realm of weightlifting, participating in both the two-handed and one-handed press events. In the two-handed press, he exhibited exceptional strength by lifting 90 kilograms. Although two other competitors matched this weight, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) awarded the bronze medal to Versis.

One-Handed Press

In the one-handed press, Versis lifted 40 kilograms, placing him in fourth position. Alexandros Nikolopoulos, his fellow Greek, secured the bronze medal with the same weight but gained an advantage by subsequently lifting 57 kilograms.
