Biography of Spartak Makovsky

Spartak Ivanovich Makovsky was born on November 27, 1920 in the city of Pavlodar, Kazakhstan. He was the son of a worker and completed his education by finishing 7 grades in the city of Zaporozhye. Makovsky worked at the "Zaporozhstal" factory and also studied at an aero club. In 1937, he joined the Red Army and graduated from the Kachinsky Military Aviation School for Pilots in 1939.

In April 1943, Makovsky was sent to the frontlines of the Great Patriotic War. He became the commander of the 1st squadron of the 43rd Fighter Aviation Regiment. During his service, Makovsky flew 92 combat missions and engaged in 49 aerial battles, personally shooting down 18 enemy aircraft and one through a ramming maneuver. On April 13, 1944, he was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union for his courage and bravery in combat.

After the war, Makovsky completed advanced tactical courses for officers and retired from the military as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1958. He settled in Sverdlovsk and was honored with numerous awards and medals, including the Orders of Lenin, Red Banner (three times), Alexander Nevsky, First Class Patriotic War (twice), and Red Star.

Makovsky passed away on March 27, 2000. Despite his heroic actions, he was often overlooked and his name was not widely remembered. However, his biography serves as a testament to his dedication to his country and his unwavering bravery in the face of the enemy.
