Stanislav Cherchesov: Accomplished Russian Footballer and Coach
Early Life and Playing CareerStanislav Cherchesov was born in Alagir, North Ossetia, on September 2, 1963. He began his football career as a goalkeeper for local club Spartak Ordzhonikidze. In 1984, Cherchesov joined Spartak Moscow, where he went on to achieve great success. With Spartak, he won four Soviet championships (1987, 1989, 1992, 1993), one Soviet Cup (1992), and three Austrian championships (2000, 2001, 2002) after the club moved its operations to Austria in 1992.
Cherchesov represented the Soviet Union and later Russia at the international level. He was a member of the Soviet squad that finished runner-up at the 1988 UEFA European Championship and played in the 1994 and 2002 FIFA World Cups, as well as the 1992 and 1996 European Championships. At the age of 36, he became the oldest player to represent the Russian national team.
Coaching Career
After retiring as a player, Cherchesov transitioned into coaching. His first head coaching role was with Austrian club Kufstein in 2004. He subsequently managed FC Wacker Tirol from 2004 to 2006, before returning to Russia to take over as sporting director at Spartak Moscow in June 2006. On June 19, 2007, he was appointed as Spartak's head coach.
Cherchesov achieved some success with Spartak Moscow, guiding the team to the quarterfinals of the UEFA Cup in 2007-08. However, his tenure was also marked by controversy, as he made several high-profile player transfers that proved unpopular with fans. Cherchesov was dismissed on August 14, 2008, after Spartak suffered a humiliating 5-1 defeat to CSKA Moscow.
Later Career
After leaving Spartak, Cherchesov worked as a pundit for several years before returning to coaching in 2017 with Russian club Terek Grozny (now known as Akhmat Grozny). He led Akhmat to victory in the Russian Cup in 2018 and was appointed as manager of the Russian national team in 2016. Under Cherchesov, Russia reached the quarterfinals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, which was hosted by the country.
