Education and Early Career
Ignace Łukasiewicz (1822-1882) was a Polish engineer, lawyer, economist, chemist, and entrepreneur who played a pivotal role in the development of the petroleum industry in Galicia. After attending schools in Chełm and Vienna, he initially worked with his father on a railway construction project in Banat (1862-1864). He then pursued higher education at the Imperial-Royal Polytechnic Institute in Vienna (1864-1867), before furthering his studies in chemistry and economics at the École Centrale des Arts et Manufactures in Paris and later in London (1869-1871).
Career in the Petroleum Industry
After obtaining an engineering diploma in London, Łukasiewicz remained in England and worked in private laboratories and the industrial department of the India Office (1870-1879). Upon his return to Poland, he embarked on a mission to develop the petroleum reserves of the Carpathian region, establishing the first Oil Exploitation Company in 1881.
In 1883, he constructed a state-of-the-art oil refinery in Peczenizyn near Kolomyia, accompanied by a pipeline connecting it to the oil fields. Three years later, he built a railway line connecting Peczenizyn to Kolomyia.
Political and Civic Engagement
Łukasiewicz's contributions extended beyond the petroleum industry. He served as a deputy in the Austrian parliament (from 1886) and the Galician Sejm (from 1889). In recognition of his achievements, he was awarded honorary citizenship of Kolomyia in 1885.
