Biography of John Dorrance
John Thompson Dorrance was an American chemist and entrepreneur known for his discovery of the method for creating condensed soup. He served as the president of Campbell Soup Company from 1914 to 1930, a company that now sells its food products in over 120 countries worldwide.
Early Life and Education
John Thompson Dorrance was born in Bristol, Pennsylvania. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he was a member of the fraternity Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Additionally, Dorrance obtained a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Göttingen in Germany.
Career
Being the nephew of the general manager of Joseph Campbell Preserve Company, Dorrance was welcomed into the family business. He began working for the company in 1897 and invented the method for producing concentrated soups. He later became the president of Campbell Soup Company from 1914 to 1930, and the company was eventually bought out from the Campbell family. Under Dorrance's skilled leadership, Campbell Soup Company, known for its canned tomatoes, vegetables, jellies, soups, seasonings, and meat products, grew into one of the largest and longest-lasting brands in America.
Personal Life and Legacy
Dorrance married Ethel Mallinckrot in 1906, and they had five children together. He passed away on September 21, 1930, due to heart disease at his home in Cinnaminson Township, New Jersey. He was laid to rest in Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania. After his death, a serious legal dispute arose regarding his estate and taxation. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled that Dorrance was a resident of Pennsylvania, while the New Jersey Supreme Court determined that he should be considered a resident of New Jersey. This turn of events compelled Dorrance's heirs to pay taxes to both states. Seeking justice, Dorrance's family appealed to the United States Supreme Court, but their request for a review of the case was denied. In 2012, Dorrance was elected to the New Jersey Hall of Fame.
