Stanisław Wojciechowski

Early Life and Activism

Stanisław Wojciechowski was born on March 15, 1869, in Kalisz, Russian Empire, into a noble family. He studied mathematics and physics at Warsaw University from 1888 to 1891, where he joined the underground organizations ZET and the Workers' Union. In 1891, he was arrested for participating in the Polish socialist movement.

Exile and Involvement in Polish Socialist Party

After his release from prison, Wojciechowski moved to Paris, where he participated in the Paris Congress. In 1892, he helped establish the Polish Socialist Party. There, he met and befriended Józef Piłsudski. Wojciechowski consistently opposed terrorism as a political tool. In 1895, he was arrested and expelled from France, living there illegally until 1899.

Work in London and Return to Poland

In 1899, Wojciechowski relocated to London, where he studied the trade union movement and helped publish the periodical "Przedswit." In 1905, he co-edited the publication "Robotnik" with Piłsudski. Wojciechowski returned to Poland in 1906, left the Polish Socialist Party, and worked towards the establishment of Polish trade unions. He founded the weekly newspaper "Społem."

World War I and Polish Army

During World War I, Wojciechowski believed Germany posed a greater threat to Poland. He moved to Moscow and became chairman of the Council of the Union of Polish Parties. In 1918, he helped establish the Polish Army in Russia but was forced to leave Moscow due to the threat of arrest.

Political Career

From 1919 to 1920, Wojciechowski served as Minister of Internal Affairs in three different Polish governments. He also participated in drafting the Polish constitution. In 1922, he was elected to the Sejm from the Polish Peasant Party "Piast."

Presidency

On December 20, 1922, Wojciechowski was elected President of Poland after the assassination of Gabriel Narutowicz. He held this office from December 22, 1922, to May 14, 1926.

May Coup and Later Life

In 1926, his former friend Piłsudski led a coup d'état and removed Wojciechowski from power. Afterwards, Wojciechowski lived in private life and died in Gołębki, near Warsaw, in 1953 at the age of 84.

Works

Wojciechowski was also a prolific writer, publishing several works on the cooperative movement, including "The Cooperative Movement in England" (1907) and "Cooperation in its Historical Development" (1923).
