Pastor Bizimungu: President of Rwanda During Post-Genocide Reconstruction
Early Life and Political Career
Pastor Bizimungu was born in 1949 in Ruhango District, Rwanda. After the assassination of his brother, allegedly on government orders, Bizimungu joined the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF).
Presidency (1994-2000)
In July 1994, after the end of the Rwandan Genocide and civil war, Bizimungu became President of the Republic of Rwanda. The interim government formed in July 1994 sought to include representation from the Hutu majority population, as Bizimungu himself represented. However, his Vice-President, Paul Kagame of the Tutsi minority, often clashed with him on policy issues. Kagame ultimately succeeded Bizimungu as President in 2000.
Post-Presidency and Legal Troubles
In 2001, Bizimungu founded the Party for Democratic Renewal. In 2002, he was placed under house arrest and in 2004 sentenced to 15 years in prison on charges that included attempting to organize armed groups.
Exoneration and Release
On February 17, 2006, the Supreme Court of Rwanda overturned Bizimungu's conviction. He was released on April 6, 2007, with President Kagame issuing an apology.
Legacy
Pastor Bizimungu's presidency marked a period of transition and reconciliation following the Rwandan Genocide. Despite his legal troubles, he remains a significant figure in Rwandan politics and has continued to advocate for democratic reform.
