Early Life and Education

Born in Eugene, Oregon, Stanley attended secondary school at Winston Churchill High School. He later pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in physics from Harvey Mudd College in 1987. Subsequent degrees include a Master of Science in astronomy from the University of Washington in 1989 and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in astrophysics from the same institution in 1993.

Professional Career

Prior to joining NASA, Stanley held various academic and research positions. From 1987 to 1989, he taught astronomy courses at the University of Washington. He then conducted astronomy and space science research at the same university until 1993.

From 1994 to 1995, Stanley worked at the University of Hawaii, focusing on meteoritics. Subsequently, he engaged in research at the California Institute of Technology from 1995 to 1997. In 1997, he joined the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

NASA Career

On June 4, 1998, Stanley became a NASA astronaut candidate. After completing training, he qualified as a flight specialist.

Spaceflight

Stanley's sole spaceflight occurred from February 7 to 20, 2008, aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis STS-122. As a flight specialist, he participated in the mission to attach the Columbus module to the International Space Station. During the 12-day, 18-hour, 21-minute, and 38-second flight, Stanley performed two spacewalks.

February 11, 2008:Stanley worked with astronaut Rex Walheim to dock the Columbus module to the space station (7 hours and 58 minutes).

February 15, 2008:The astronauts installed scientific equipment on the Columbus module (7 hours and 25 minutes).
