Istvan Avar: A Hungarian and Romanian Footballing Legend

Early Career

Istvan Avar was born in Arad, Romania, and began his football career with local club AMEF. In 1926, he made his international debut for Romania against Bulgaria, scoring in his first match. He earned one more cap for Romania, scoring twice in a 3-3 draw with Poland.

Move to Hungary

Following the 1927 Romanian championship, Avar moved to Hungary to join Újpest FC. During its golden age in the 1920s and 1930s, Újpest was one of Europe's top clubs. With Avar as a prolific striker, they won four Hungarian championships, the Mitropa Cup (where Avar was top scorer), and the Nations Cup.

International Success

Avar's performances for Újpest earned him a call-up to the Hungarian national team. He made 21 appearances for Hungary, scoring 24 goals. He participated in the Central European Cup and the 1934 FIFA World Cup.

Return to Romania

After leaving Újpest, Avar returned to Romania to join Rapid Bucharest. He also played for Caposvár Rakoczi and Kaszav.

Legacy

Istvan Avar was a gifted forward with a remarkable international career spanning both Hungary and Romania. His goalscoring prowess and contributions to both countries' football history continue to be celebrated. He remains an icon of the golden age of Eastern European football.
