Early Life and Beginnings
Stevan Knićanin was born in the village of Knić, near Kragujevac, in the Ottoman-held Smederevo Sanjak. As a young man, he pursued a career in trade and became a prominent merchant.
Military Career
Knićanin's military aspirations were ignited by his appointment as a military commander in Smederevo. However, his involvement in a rebellion against Prince Mihailo Obrenović led to his exile in Vidin.
Return and War against the Hungarians
With the ascent of Prince Alexander Karageorgević, Knićanin was recalled and appointed to the senate. In 1848, he supported Serbian Patriarch Josif Rajačić's pro-Austrian policy and the revolt of Serbs and Croats against the Hungarians.
Leading a volunteer force of thousands, Knićanin played a pivotal role in the suppression of the Hungarian uprising. His successful actions against the Hungarians earned him recognition.
Post-War Service
In 1854, Knićanin was appointed War Minister and Chairman of the Military Council. As a testament to his military prowess, he was awarded the esteemed Order of Maria Theresa, the highest military decoration in the Austrian army.
Death and Legacy
Knićanin passed away on May 14, 1855, in Belgrade, due to a stroke. His legacy continues to live on in the village of Knićanin in Vojvodina, which bears his name in his honor.
