General Haim Bar-Lev: A Legendary Israeli Commander
Early Life and EducationBorn in Tel Aviv, General Haim Bar-Lev grew up in a modest neighborhood, attending a school for working-class children. He later studied at a school in Kibbutz Givat HaShlosha.
Military Career
Joining the PalmachAt the age of 18, Bar-Lev joined the Palmach, the elite strike force of the Haganah underground organization. He played a key role in the "Night of the Bridges" operation in 1946.
1948 Arab-Israeli War and Rise in the IDF
During the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, Bar-Lev fought with the Palmach under the command of Yigal Alon. After the war, he remained in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), rising through the ranks.
Southern Command Commander
From 1965 to 1969, Bar-Lev served as the commander of the IDF's Southern Command. He was responsible for the defense of the southern border with Egypt.
Six-Day War
Leading Israel's Offensive on SinaiBar-Lev's most significant military accomplishment came during the Six-Day War in 1967, when he commanded the Israeli forces that launched an offensive against Egyptian troops in the Sinai Peninsula. While the ground campaign was a resounding success, his subordinate division commanders, Generals Israel Tal and Ariel Sharon, received greater recognition than he did.
Later Life and Legacy
Establishment of the Palmach MuseumAfter his military career, Bar-Lev became one of the founders of the Palmach Museum in Tel Aviv, dedicated to preserving the history of the Palmach.
Autobiography and Independence Day Honor
In 2016, Bar-Lev published his autobiography, "Sadin Adom" (Red Sheet). In 2018, he was honored with lighting a torch at the ceremony commemorating the 70th anniversary of Israel's independence.
