Biography of Stefania Belmondo

Belmondo was born on January 13, 1969, in the small town of Vinadio in the Cuneo province.
Early Life and Passion for Skiing
At the age of three, Belmondo's father handcrafted wooden skis for her, painting them red. She spent a lot of time with her father on a large field covered with snow near their home, where he taught her how to ski. At the age of six, Belmondo started participating in children's ski competitions, and despite not always winning, she enjoyed the experience and found joy in competing.
Professional Career
In 1982, Belmondo joined the Piedmont regional team and in 1986, she became a member of the junior national team. By 1987, she was part of the Italian national team. That same year, she became the first Italian female skier to podium at the Junior World Championships. In 1989, Belmondo achieved another milestone by becoming the first Italian woman to win a World Cup race in Salt Lake City.
In 1991, Belmondo made history once again by becoming the first Italian woman to win a medal at the World Championships, earning a bronze medal in the 15-kilometer classic race. She continued to excel in her career, winning numerous medals and accolades, including silver and bronze medals at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville.
Challenges and Comebacks
Belmondo faced challenges throughout her career, including multiple surgeries on her left foot, which affected her mobility. Despite these setbacks, she showed incredible determination and continued to train and compete. In 2002, at the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Belmondo won her second Olympic gold medal in the 30-kilometer race, showcasing her resilience and skill.
