Early Life and Education
Mykhailo Horyn was born on January 30, 1947, in Vytvytsia, Ukraine, to a peasant family. In 1969, he graduated from the Faculty of Physics at Lviv State University, specializing in radiophysics.
Scientific and Military Service
Horyn worked as a lab assistant at the Scientific and Research Institute of Physical Problems in Moscow and as an engineer at VNIAsbestproekt in Asbest, Russian SFSR, from 1969 to 1971. After completing his military service in Kamchatka, he returned to VNIAsbestproekt and pursued graduate studies at the Moscow Mining Institute. In 1976, he defended his dissertation and received a Candidate of Technical Sciences degree.
Academic Career
From 1978 to 1989, Horyn held various academic positions at the Ivano-Frankivsk Institute of Oil and Gas, including assistant, senior lecturer, and associate professor in the Department of Higher Mathematics.
Political Career
Horyn joined the Ukrainian People's Movement (also known as Rukh) in 1989 and became deputy chairman of its regional council. In 1990, he was elected as a People's Deputy to the Supreme Council of the Ukrainian SSR (later renamed the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine) for the Dolina electoral district.
Chairman of Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast
From 1992 to 1998, Horyn served as the Chairman of the Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast Council and concurrently as Chairman of the Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast Executive Committee from 1994 to 1995. In 1995, he became the Chairman of the Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast State Administration until 1997.
Second Term in Parliament
Horyn was re-elected as a People's Deputy to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine in 1994.
Diplomatic Career
In 1998, Horyn was appointed as the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Ukraine to Georgia, a position he held until 2003. From 2005 to 2008, he served as the Ambassador of Ukraine to Azerbaijan.
Post-Diplomatic Activities
Since 2009, Horyn has been the head of the Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast branch of the Ukrainian society "Prosvita" named after Taras Shevchenko.
Awards and Recognition
Horyn has received the Order of Merit III (1997) and II (2009), and the Jubilee Medal "25 Years of Independence of Ukraine" (2006).
