Born on August 3, 1970, in Sacramento, California, Stephen Carpenter grew up with his mother, Maria, and sister, Margie. From a young age, Carpenter was an avid skateboarder. At age 15, a skateboarding accident left him confined to a wheelchair for several months. During this time, Carpenter began learning to play guitar, inspired by the music of rock bands such as Anthrax, Stormtroopers of Death, and Metallica.

Formation of Deftones

In high school, Carpenter met Chino Moreno and Abe Cunningham, future members of Deftones. When Moreno discovered Carpenter's guitar skills, he suggested they jam with Cunningham. From then on, the trio began practicing in Carpenter's garage (1988).

Musical Inspirations

Carpenter's musical influences primarily stem from rap music and bands such as Meshuggah, Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Faith No More, Depeche Mode, and Led Zeppelin. He has cited Meshuggah's album "Chaosphere" as his all-time favorite.
