Steven Christian: Singer, Songwriter, and Pastor
Early Life and EducationBorn in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Steven Christian spent his formative years in Winter Haven, Florida. While attending Winter Haven High School, he formed the punk band SaGoh 24/7 alongside fellow musicians Deon Rexroat and Joseph Milligan. SaGoh 24/7 later evolved into Anberlin.
Christian holds a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Central Florida and a law degree from Florida State University College of Law. He initially pursued a career in non-profits but ultimately signed with Anberlin shortly after graduating.
Musical Career
2002-2014: AnberlinAs the frontman of Anberlin, Christian played a pivotal role in songwriting and vocal performance. The band released seven albums: Blueprints for the Black Market, Never Take Friendship Personal, Cities, New Surrender, Dark Is the Way, Light Is a Place, Vital, and Lowborn. They also released a compilation album titled Lost Songs.
2007-2014: Anchor & Braille and Wood Water Records
Christian founded Anchor & Braille, an acoustic side-project, and established its label, Wood Water Records, distributed by Universal Music Group. He released a 7-inch single in 2007 and later released Anchor & Braille's debut album, Felt, in 2009. The album was produced by Aaron Marsh of Copeland and debuted at number 30 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart.
In 2012, Anchor & Braille released their second album, The Quiet Life. Christian's songwriting received critical acclaim, with Artist Direct praising "Goes Without Saying" as "one of the most brilliant and beautiful recordings in Christian's catalog."
Leadership and Ministry
2015-Present: Worship Leader and PastorAfter Anberlin's final world tour, Christian pursued spiritual guidance and became a worship leader at Calvary Chapel in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
In 2019, Christian was appointed as Director of Worship and Creative Arts at Calvary Church in Clearwater, Florida. He later became the Pastor of Grace Family Church's South Tampa campus.
Style and Influences
Christian's humanitarian efforts have influenced the themes of many of Anberlin's songs. He has also expressed admiration for musicians such as Radiohead and Mineral.
