Biography of Stephen Dillane
Early LifeStephen Dillane, an English actor widely known for his roles in film and television, was born in Kensington, London. His father, John Dillane, was a surgeon from Australia, and his mother, Bridget, was English. He has a younger brother, Richard, who also became an actor. Dillane studied history and politics at the University of Exeter before pursuing a career in journalism.
Transition to Acting
Dillane's interest in acting was sparked by the story of Trevor Eve, an architect who became an actor. Inspired by Eve's biography, Dillane enrolled in the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. He initially performed under the name "Stephen Dillon" but later returned to his birth name, Dillane, in the 1990s.
Theatrical Success
Dillane achieved significant success as a stage actor, with notable roles in plays such as "The Beaux' Stratagem," "Angels in America," "Hamlet," "Endgame," "Uncle Vanya," "The Coast of Utopia," "Macbeth," and Tom Stoppard's "The Real Thing." His performance in "The Real Thing" earned him a Tony Award in 2000.
Film and Television Career
Dillane gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Stannis Baratheon in the hit television series "Game of Thrones." He also appeared in films such as "The Hours," the mini-series "John Adams," and "Goal!" One of his most acclaimed film roles was playing Horatio in the 1990 adaptation of "Hamlet" alongside Mel Gibson.
Recent Work
In 2012, Dillane played the lead role of Rupert Keel in the television series "Hunted." He also appeared in the independent British film "Papadopoulos & Sons," where he portrayed a once-successful entrepreneur navigating the aftermath of a financial crisis. Dillane's real-life son, Frank, played his character's son in the film.
Personal Life
Dillane is married to actress Naomi Wirthner, and they have two children together, Seamus and Frank. Frank has followed in his father's footsteps and has had success as an actor, including playing young Voldemort in "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince."
