Hungarian Historian
István Katona (1732-1811) was a renowned Hungarian historian. His notable works include: "Synopsis chronologica" (1771), "Historia critica regum Hungariae" (40 volumes, 1779-1817), and "Orationes" (Pest, 1813).
Early Life and Education
Katona was born in Kisújszállás, Hungary, on May 11, 1732. His early education was at the Debrecen Reformed College. He later attended the universities of Göttingen and Vienna, where he studied history and theology.
Historical Research and Writing
After completing his studies, Katona returned to Hungary and devoted himself to historical research. His most significant work, "Historia critica regum Hungariae," was a comprehensive history of the Hungarian monarchy from its origins to the 16th century. This monumental work was published in 40 volumes over a period of 38 years.
Other Historical Contributions
In addition to his major works, Katona also published several other historical studies. His "Synopsis chronologica" was an important chronological overview of Hungarian history, while his "Orationes" collection included speeches and lectures he had delivered on various historical topics.
Legacy and Recognition
István Katona's historical writings played a major role in shaping the understanding of Hungarian history during and after his lifetime. He was highly respected for his meticulous research and critical analysis, and he earned the title of "Father of Hungarian Historiography." Today, his works remain a valuable source of information for historians and scholars.
Death and Burial
Katona died in Pest on October 15, 1811, at the age of 79. He was buried in the Great Reformed Church in Debrecen, where his grave can still be visited.
