Early Life and Political ActivismBorn in 1922 in Greece's Florina region, Stojan Kočov became a prominent Macedonian historian and publicist. During the Greek Civil War (1946-1949), he fought alongside the Democratic Army of Greece, as well as the National Liberation Front, a partisan organization representing ethnic Macedonians in Greece.
Exile and Return
Following the defeat in the Civil War, Kočov was evacuated to the Soviet Union, where he resided from 1950 to 1957. Upon the restoration of diplomatic ties between the USSR and the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY), Kočov emigrated to SR Macedonia in 1957.
Macedonian Activism and Historical Research
Stojan Kočov emerged as a leading researcher on the participation of Macedonians in the Greek Civil War. He published several significant works on this topic, including "The Macedonian Question and the Greek Civil War: 1946-1949" (1991). Kočov's writings shed light on the historical experiences of Macedonians during this tumultuous period and contributed to the preservation of their cultural heritage.
