Early Life and Education
Stone Phillips was born on December 2, 1954, in Texas. He spent his childhood in St. Louis, where his father, Victor, was a chemical engineer, and his mother was a schoolteacher. Phillips has two siblings: a brother, Vic, who works at the University of Wisconsin's College of Natural Resources, and a sister, Minta, who is a radiologist in Greensboro and a graduate of Harvard Medical School.
Phillips attended Parkway West High School, where he excelled academically and athletically. After graduating, he enrolled at the Yale School of Drama, where he played on the school's football team. Phillips earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy and was a member of the honorary society Scroll and Key.
Journalism Career
In 1986, Phillips began his journalism career as a correspondent for the radio show "Good Morning America" and as an anchor for "ABC's World News Sunday." He also contributed to the print magazine "Weekend Magazine with Stone Phillips."
Phillips joined NBC News in 2007, where he has served as an anchor for "Dateline NBC" and "NBC Nightly News" and a moderator for "Meet the Press." He has been praised for his distinctive articulation and authoritative demeanor.
