Evelyn Lederer's Early Life and Education

Evelina Lederer, who later became known as Sue Carol, was born on October 30, 1906, in Chicago, Illinois, to a wealthy Jewish family. From an early age, she pursued dance lessons and showed a passion for the performing arts.

Transition to California and Film Career

In 1925, following the death of her father, a successful Chicago businessman, Evelina relocated to California. Two years later, in 1927, she landed a supporting role in the silent film "Slaves of Beauty." Around the same time, she adopted the stage name Sue Carol.

WAMPAS Baby Star and Stardom

In 1928, Sue was named one of the WAMPAS Baby Stars, a prestigious annual selection recognizing promising young actresses. Despite her potential, her leading roles were short-lived, spanning from 1928 to 1931. In total, she appeared in 26 films, primarily in the genres of melodrama and romantic comedy.

Retirement from Acting and Enterprising

In 1937, Sue decided to retire from acting. The following year, she established her own talent agency, representing and promoting aspiring actors. Her entrepreneurial venture proved successful, and she used her connections and expertise to guide others in the entertainment industry.

Personal Life and Family

Sue Carol was married four times. Her first marriage to Allan Kieffer in the mid-1920s ended in divorce within a year. She then married actor Nick Stuart in 1930, with whom she co-starred in four films until their separation in 1934. In 1942, Sue married her third husband, actor Alan Ladd, after becoming his agent. Their marriage lasted until Alan's death in 1964. Their son, David, and Alan's daughter also pursued acting careers, although with less success than their parents.

Legacy and Honors

Sue Carol passed away on February 4, 1982, at the age of 76 due to a heart attack. She was posthumously honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Her contributions to the entertainment industry as both an actress and an agent continue to be recognized and celebrated.
