The Tragic Demise of Sulev Luik: A Timeline of Events

Summer of 1997: Discovery of a Corpse

On a fateful summer day in 1997, the lifeless body of a man was discovered in Kadriorg Park, Tallinn. The decomposing body bore stab wounds on the chest and neck, indicating a violent end a week prior. Without any identification documents, the victim remained unidentified until the following day.

Identification of Sulev Luik

Tragically, the victim was identified as Sulev Luik, a renowned actor from the Estonian Drama Theatre and renowned for his roles in films like "Hotel of the Deceased Mountaineer," "The Kidnapping of the Wizard," and "Spirit Day."

A Night of Intoxication and Conflict

The previous evening, four young people—Vladimir Derwojed, Erik Kuningas, Anna Puzakevicius, and Oleg Omelyenko—gathered in Kadriorg Park for a late-night picnic. Already intoxicated, they continued drinking diluted alcohol and grilling meat.

As night fell, a stranger named Alexander approached their group. He shared drinks with them and engaged in conversation. However, a disagreement erupted, leading to a violent confrontation in which the stranger was killed.

Aftermath and Arrest

The group fled the scene and relocated to another location, where they continued to drink. It was through a news report on the radio that they learned about the murder in Kadriorg and realized that the man they had encountered that night was indeed Sulev Luik. Luik had been living nearby with his family.

In September, all four suspects were apprehended.

Trial and Controversies
Initial Court Proceedings

The trial commenced in November and concluded in April. The court faced the challenge of reconstructing the crime and determining the individual roles of the accused. Direct witnesses were absent, and the defendants provided conflicting accounts.

Motives of the Murder

The defendants claimed that the stranger had made sexual advances toward Kuningas and Puzakevicius, prompting Kuningas to strike him in the face. Derwojed then stabbed the victim in the heart, delivering the fatal blow. Kuningas also stabbed Luik in the chest with a barbecue skewer. Derwojed disfigured the victim's face with a stone to prevent identification and stole his shoes. Puzakevicius allegedly sliced Luik's neck with a knife to end his suffering.

Charges and Contesting Arguments

Derwojed, Kuningas, and Puzakevicius were charged with willful murder. Omelyenko faced charges of failing to report the crime.

The victim's lawyer, Aivar Piilv, attempted to reclassify the charges under a more severe article, arguing that the murder was particularly gruesome and committed by a group. However, prosecutor Dalaila Nahkur and the court disagreed, citing insufficient evidence to support an aggravated murder charge.

Dissatisfaction and Inconsistencies

Prosecutor's and Defense's Perspectives

Nahkur and Piilv disputed the defendants' version of events, labeling it fabrication. The prosecutor suggested that Luik's desire to leave the group and their demand for more alcohol may have been the catalyst for the conflict.

Investigative Shortcomings

Piilv and Luik's widow, Heli Luik, expressed dissatisfaction with the investigation and the prosecution's conclusion. They argued that crucial questions about the motive and sequence of events remained unanswered. Heli Luik declared her dismay at the disconnect between the image of her husband and the accusations against the suspects.

Sentencing and Repercussions

Prison Sentences

The court found Derwojed guilty and sentenced him to 12.5 years in prison. Kuningas received a 10-year sentence. Puzakevicius was sentenced to 8 years for her involvement, while Omelyenko faced a 1-year sentence for failing to report the crime.

Civil Suit and Minister's Regret

The Estonian Drama Theatre filed a civil lawsuit, resulting in 43700 kroons in compensation from the defendants. At the actor's memorial service, Estonia's Minister of Culture, Jaak Allik, expressed shame at the government's inability to protect its citizens.

The murder of Sulev Luik remains a chilling reminder of the fragility of life and the tragic consequences of unchecked violence and intoxication.
