Roman Berezovsky: Russian Professional Boxer
Roman Berezovsky is a Russian professional boxer who was born on March 8, 1975, in Kaspiysk, Dagestan ASSR. He started boxing after moving to Rostov-on-Don, where his brother lived.
Amateur Career
In 1998, Berezovsky joined the Russian national boxing team. His greatest success in amateur boxing came in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, where he won the silver medal in the heavyweight category. He also won a silver medal at the European Championship in Tampere, Finland, in 2000 and a bronze medal at the World Championship in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in 2001.
Professional Career
On May 25, 2002, Berezovsky made his professional debut in the prestigious heavyweight division. By the end of 2005, he had won all 19 of his fights and earned the right to fight for the title of official contender for the IBF (International Boxing Federation) world champion.
On July 28, 2006, Berezovsky faced American boxer Ray Austin, and the judges declared it a draw, allowing Austin to retain his status as the IBF official contender. In his next fight on March 10, 2007, Berezovsky knocked out Javier Mora of the United States in the first round.
On June 2, 2007, Berezovsky had his first championship fight and won a decision victory over the WBO (World Boxing Organization) titleholder Shannon Briggs of the United States. He then signed a contract for a unification fight with WBA (World Boxing Association) champion Ruslan Chagaev, but the fight did not take place due to Chagaev's illness.
In early August 2007, Berezovsky signed a contract to fight former undisputed world champion Evander Holyfield. The fight between Berezovsky and Holyfield took place on October 13, 2007, at the Megasport Palace in Moscow. After 12 rounds, the judges unanimously awarded Berezovsky the victory with scores of 117-111 (twice) and 118-110.
In November 2007, Berezovsky agreed to fight IBF world champion Vladimir Klitschko. This meeting, which became the first unified heavyweight fight since 1999, took place on February 23, 2008, at the famous Madison Square Garden in New York City. Klitschko dominated the fight, and the judges unanimously awarded him the victory with scores of 119-110, 117-111, and 118-110. As a result, Berezovsky lost the WBO title, and Klitschko became the world champion of both the IBF and WBO.
Berezovsky, a southpaw, boxes from an orthodox stance. He is one of only five southpaw heavyweights to have won a championship title in this weight category. In total, Berezovsky had 24 professional fights, winning 22 (17 by knockout), drawing one, and losing one.
