Sumya Anani: From Massage Therapist to Boxing Champion

Sumya Anani is an American boxer and one of the most promising athletes of our time. Like many modern female boxers, Anani came to the ring from the world of high fashion. She became interested in martial arts while working as a massage therapist in Kansas City. Impressed by her powerful punches and excellent physical shape, her instructor convinced her to try boxing.

Rise to Prominence

Anani began her professional career in August 1996, primarily fighting in the Kansas City area. She quickly gained a solid reputation, especially after her fourth match on December 12, 1996, where she knocked out her opponent, Katherine Dallam, with a powerful punch that caused multiple brain injuries.

In her ninth fight in March 1998, Anani faced Andrea DeShong, the sworn rival of the reigning Welterweight champion Christy Martin. Anani managed to defeat DeShong and then went on to face Martin herself on December 18. The fight took place in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where Martin had previously won 34 consecutive matches. However, Anani dominated the match from the beginning and ultimately destroyed her opponent. Her victory over Martin made Anani even more popular, and she won four more fights before losing to Britt Van Buskirk on September 17, 2000.

Although one judge declared Anani the winner, two others voted for a draw.

In February 2002, Anani faced Van Buskirk for the third time and once again emerged as the winner. On June 21, 2002, she won her third world championship title by defeating Jane Couch for the WIBA Junior Welterweight title. Couch couldn't provide strong resistance, and Anani knocked her out in the fourth round.

On November 2, Anani won her fourth championship belt by defeating Lisa Holewyne for the IBA Junior Middleweight title. Despite a loss to Gibbs in April 2003, Anani remained a dominant force in the boxing world. She returned in April 2004 for a rematch with Holewyne, refusing to relinquish her titles.

Legacy and Future

Anani's last officially known fight was against Stephanie Jaramillo. At that time, Anani held four championship titles and was widely regarded as one of the best female boxers in the world. For Jaramillo, this fight was perhaps her only chance to face Anani at the peak of her success. Despite her eventual defeat, Jaramillo's performance showcased her potential to become a well-known athlete in the future.
