Early Life and Education
Susannah Salter: Born on March 2, 1860, in Lamaire, Ohio, Susannah Salter was the daughter of Quaker colonists. Her family relocated to Kansas in 1872, settling on a farm in Silver Lake. At the age of 20, Salter enrolled in Kansas State Agricultural College (now Kansas State University). Despite skipping a year due to prior education, she left the institution six weeks before graduating due to health reasons.
Move to Argonia and Activism
Argonian Roots:Upon meeting Lewis Salter, a young attorney, Susannah married and moved to Argonia. There, she became involved in the Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) and the Prohibition Party. She also formed a friendship with temperance activist Carrie Nation.
Political Career
Unexpected Mayoralty:In 1887, Susannah Salter made history by becoming the first woman mayor in the United States. Her election, initially a prank by local men, gained wider support from the WCTU and even the Republican Party.
National Recognition
Media Attention:Salter's election garnered national attention, with newspapers in New York, Sweden, and South Africa reporting on her groundbreaking achievement. She received numerous letters of support from women's rights advocates.
Post-Mayoralty Life
Legacy of Leadership:After a year in office, Salter chose not to seek reelection. She continued to reside in Argonia until 1893 before relocating to Oklahoma. Throughout her life, she remained active in the women's suffrage movement and served as a role model for aspiring leaders.
