Svetalana Sakhanenka, Three-Time Paralympic Champion
Svetalana Sakhanenka (born in Novopolotsk, Belarus) is an accomplished para-Nordic skier and biathlete. She was the first Belarusian to win a gold medal at the 2018 Winter Paralympics, which she achieved in the cross-country skiing 15 km free event.
Early Life and Athletic Background
Sakhanenka's family has a strong history of athleticism. Her mother was a long-distance runner, while her grandfather and grandmother excelled in swimming, speed skating, and track and field, respectively.
Raised in a sports-oriented environment, Sakhanenka began skiing at the age of nine. She initially trained at the Novopolotsk Olympic Reserve School from 2004 to 2009.
Vision Loss and Paralympic Journey
During her time at the Olympic Reserve School, Sakhanenka's vision began to deteriorate. Medical intervention prevented complete blindness, but her eyesight remains severely impaired at -12.
Sakhanenka relocated to Mogilev and trained under Anatoly Ivanovich Perepechkin. Despite her talent, she was unable to secure a spot on the Belarusian national team due to a lack of proper medical documentation.
Career Hiatus and Return to Sport
Discouraged by these setbacks, Sakhanenka briefly retired from sport. She worked in various roles, including hotel administrator and dance studio manager.
In 2017, she returned to competitive skiing and became a sports instructor at the Olympic Training Center.
Paralympic Success
At the 2018 Winter Paralympics in PyeongChang, Sakhanenka competed in cross-country skiing and biathlon in the B2 classification. She won a total of three gold medals:
- 15 km cross-country skiing (free style)
- 1.5 km sprint cross-country skiing (classic style)- 7.5 km cross-country skiing
Sakhanenka's historic achievements earned her a congratulatory telegram from her former school and a personal message from Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.
