Biography of Svetoslav Nikolayevich Roerich
Early Life and EducationSvetoslav Nikolayevich Roerich, the son of renowned painter and philosopher Nicholas Roerich and occultist Helena Roerich, was born on November 5, 1904. From a young age, he displayed artistic talent in drawing and sculpting. His father encouraged his artistic pursuits and took him on archaeological expeditions.
In 1916, the family moved to Finland, where 13-year-old Svetoslav painted his first portrait of his father. In 1919, he began studying architecture at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. While continuing his painting, he collaborated with his father on opera set designs.
He furthered his education in the United States, studying architecture at Columbia University and later at Harvard. During this time, he produced numerous paintings and engaged in book illustration and graphic art.
International Artistic Center
In 1923, Svetoslav Roerich became the head of the international art center "Corona Mundi." Later, he served as vice-president of the Nicholas Roerich Museum in New York. Despite his administrative responsibilities, he continued to pursue painting, earning critical acclaim for his blossoming talent.
Move to India
In 1931, after completing his studies, Roerich relocated to India's Kullu Valley to join his family. There, he became actively involved in Indian society and culture, dedicating himself to painting. India became his second home, inspiring much of his artistic output.
Spiritual Legacy
Svetoslav Nikolayevich Roerich was a spiritual heir to his father's philosophical teachings. He continued his father's work, promoting cross-cultural understanding and preserving ancient wisdom.
Death and Legacy
Svetoslav Nikolayevich Roerich passed away on January 30, 1993. His legacy lives on through his numerous paintings, writings, and his unwavering commitment to art, spirituality, and international cooperation.
