Saint Veronica: The Bearer of the Holy Image

Veronica is a revered Christian saint whose story is intertwined with the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. According to church tradition, she compassionately offered Jesus a cloth to wipe his face as he stumbled and fell on his way to Calvary. Miraculously, his image was imprinted upon the fabric, creating an "icon vera" (true image) of his likeness.

Association with the Bleeding Woman

In addition to this shared Christian legend, the Orthodox Church identifies Veronica with the bleeding woman who was healed by touching the hem of Christ's garment (Mark 9:20-22).

Historical Embellishments

Legends have proliferated around Saint Veronica, attributing historical details to her enigmatic figure. One legend claims she preached Christianity in southern Gaul. Others suggest she was a Greek princess or even identical to Martha, the sister of Lazarus. An Italian tradition credits her with healing Emperor Tiberius using the cloth imprinted with Christ's image.

Etymology of the Name

It is hypothesized that the name Veronica originates from the Latin phrase "vera icon," meaning "true image." This term was used to distinguish the "Sudarium of Veronica" from other depictions of Christ.

First Record and Legacy

The earliest account of Saint Veronica appears in the apocryphal Acts of Pilate, dating back to the 4th or 5th century. She is revered as the patron saint of photographers and photography. Consequently, Saint Veronica's feast day (July 12 or February 4, depending on the denomination) is celebrated as the Day of the Photographer, a professional holiday for both amateur and professional photographers.
