Syahrir: An Eminent Economist and Political Activist
Early Life and EducationSyahrir was born on February 24, 1945, in Kudus, Central Java. He was the only child in a family from West Sumatra. His father was a high-ranking government official, while his mother worked in the education department.
Syahrir received his early education in Jakarta and Amsterdam. Later, he attended Canisius College in Jakarta, where he developed an interest in economics. In university, he pursued a degree in economics and actively participated in student organizations.
Political Activism and Imprisonment
Syahrir became the head of the United Actions of Indonesian Students. His political involvement led him to become General Secretary of the Student Senate of the Faculty of Economics at the University of Indonesia. In 1974, he was arrested during the Malari riots and sentenced to six and a half years in prison for subversion. He spent almost four years in prison as a political inmate.
Academic and Research Career
After his release from prison, Syahrir received a scholarship to pursue his Master's degree at the Kennedy School of Government. In 1983, he obtained his doctorate from Harvard University in political economy and public administration. Upon his return to Jakarta, he taught at his former faculty and established the Institute for Economic and Financial Research. He also founded the Yayasan Padi & Kapas, focusing on research in health and education.
Political Founding and Involvement
During the political reform era in 2001, Syahrir co-founded the New Indonesia Alliance, which monitored the government's performance. In 2002, he helped establish the New Indonesia Alliance Party, which participated in elections.
Presidential Advisor
In 2007, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono appointed Syahrir as an economic advisor to the Presidential Advisory Council. He served in this role until his untimely death.
Personal Life and Legacy
Syahrir was married to Nurmala Kartini Syahrir, the former head of the Indonesian Anthropological Association. They had two children, a son named Pandu and a daughter named Gita.
Dr. Syahrir passed away on July 28, 2008, in Singapore after a battle with lung cancer. He is remembered as a renowned economist, political activist, and dedicated public servant who made significant contributions to Indonesian society.
