Early Life and Military Career
Antanas Juozapavičius Žukovskis was born on July 12, 1858, into a noble family in the Kovno Governorate of the Russian Empire. He attended the Marijampolė Gymnasium before enrolling in the Vilna Infantry Junker School in 1881. Graduating in 1885, he was commissioned as a sub-lieutenant and assigned to the 112th Ural Infantry Regiment.
In 1887, Žukovskis was promoted to lieutenant. He served in the 176th Perevolochensky Infantry Regiment, steadily rising through the ranks and commanding a company and battalion. In 1908, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and appointed battalion commander in the 131st Tiraspol Infantry Regiment. In 1911, he attained the rank of colonel.
World War I and Decorations
At the outbreak of World War I, Žukovskis was appointed commander of the 314th Novooskolsky Infantry Regiment. For his exceptional service at the front, he was awarded the coveted St. George's Sword in 1916. On April 5, 1916, he was placed in command of the 2nd Brigade of the 1st Infantry Division. On November 8, 1916, he was promoted to major general and given command of the entire 1st Infantry Division on May 18, 1917.
Service in the Lithuanian Army
Following the collapse of the Russian front in late 1917, Žukovskis returned to his homeland and joined the Lithuanian Army. In 1918, he became Lithuania's Minister of Defense and later served as Chief of the Lithuanian General Staff in 1919. On May 9, 1919, he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Lithuanian Army but dismissed in the autumn of that year.
Undeterred, Žukovskis resumed his military service in 1920 and was reappointed as Lithuania's Commander-in-Chief. However, he was again dismissed after about a year. On June 6, 1923, Žukovskis was appointed Commander-in-Chief for the final time, holding the position until his retirement in January 1928.
Death and Legacy
Antanas Žukovskis died in Kaunas on November 26, 1937. His significant contributions to the establishment of the Lithuanian Army earned him the distinction of being considered its founder.
