Early Life and Military Career

In October 1910, the young German officer embarked on his military journey as a fanen-junker (officer candidate) in a fusilier regiment. By January 1913, he had attained the rank of lieutenant and commanded a company.

World War I

During the First World War, the lieutenant distinguished himself on the battlefield, earning Iron Crosses of both classes and three additional orders. Despite sustaining wounds, he continued his service.

Interwar Period

After the war, the officer remained in the Reichswehr, rising to the rank of colonel and serving as Chief of Staff of the Army General Staff by the outbreak of World War II.

World War II

French Campaign

In May-June 1940, the colonel participated in the French Campaign, earning additional clasps to his Iron Crosses.

Eastern Front

From June 22, 1941, he commanded the 5th Infantry Division in the invasion of the Soviet Union. His leadership in Belarus earned him the Knight's Cross (No. 365) in July 1941. He subsequently fought in the Moscow region.

Promotions and Honors

In August 1942, he was promoted to general-lieutenant. In December 1942, he received the Oak Leaves to the Knight's Cross for his exceptional service.

Later Wartime Assignments

From January to June 1943, the general served as an instructor at the divisional commanders' training courses in Berlin. In April 1943, he was promoted to general of infantry. From July 1943, he commanded the 5th Army Corps in the Caucasus.

Command of the 17th Army

In May 1944, he took command of the 17th Army. On July 25, 1944, he was transferred to the reserve.

Post-War

On May 16, 1945, he was taken prisoner by the Americans and released in December 1947.
